W.C.T.U. = Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, an international temperance organisation which was founded in the USA in 1874 to advocate abstinence from alcoholic drinks; the WTCU in Australia began in 1882, and grew to eclipse the pre-existing Australian temperance organisations (the WTCU was most active in Australia during the 1890s to 1930s, and still exists on a smaller scale in modern times)
