Rugby League.
Australians’ easy win.
(United Service Cables).
Manchester, Saturday.
At half-time Australia led by 21 to 0, and finally won by 48 to 3.
The ground was dry and 8000 spectators were present. Pearce dominated the scrums but was frequently penalised.
Vest scored the first try as the result of a passing movement from the ruck. Burge scored from a pass by Horder and the third try was scored by Craig as a result of a dazzling passing display. Then Blinkhorn scored a try after a long sprint, fending four tacklers. He received an ovation.
The Australians pressed continuously in the first half. Salford tackled soundly, and refused to accept the dummy pass. Craig made a wonderful run, supported by Ryan and Gray, the lastnamed scoring. Forward passing and over-eagerness deprived the visitors of three more tries.
Horder scored, and also converted four minutes from the start of the second half. Running from his own quarter, Blinkhorn scored; and after Craig had made a brilliant run, Ryan scored after receiving the ball from Horder, who fielded it brilliantly at the tip of his toes.
Salford were continuously defending in their own quarter for twenty minutes. The Australians were frequently recalled for forward passing. Thompson wriggled through the ruck and passed to Gray, to Vest, to Burge, who scored Australia’s ninth try.
Thomas, Salford’s 19-year veteran, who was making his final appearance, scored Salford’s only try. Blinkhorn, Vest, and Horder scored the last tries.
Thompson converted three tries, and Horder and Burge two each.
Receipts amounted to £856.
