I own a book entitled ‘the poems of Percy B Shelley’ with a signature; E.J.Pitt, I’m curious to know if this has any connection with Mary E J Pitt, & if so, if it has any historical value? Thank you for any research this may incur.
If the book was signed by Marie E. J. Pitt, it would be likely to have incorporated the name “Marie”, rather than just “E. J. Pitt”. However, if you want to check the signature in your book against the signature of Marie E. J. Pitt, you can see a sample of her signature on the NSW State Library’s site, at: https://archival.sl.nsw.gov.au/Details/archive/110326173 (click on the photo link near the bottom of the page).
Marie E. J. Pitt had four children. 1) A daughter who died at birth (name unknown), 2) Evaline Marie, 3) Ida Mabel, and 4) William. Therefore, none of those would have been the “E. J. Pitt” who owned the book. See: https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/GQ1F-MMC/william-pitt-1902-1948 ; https://www.geni.com/people/William-Pitt/6000000174638735840 ; and Colleen Burke, Doherty’s Corner: the Life and Work of Poet Marie E. J. Pitt, North Ryde (NSW): Angus & Robertson, 1985.
It is possible that the person was (or was not) a relative of Marie E. J. Pitt; however, no information could be located on a relative of Marie E. J. Pitt who was an “E. J. Pitt”.
