The photograph on the postcard is of the Federal Government House, located in Kings Domain, Melbourne (Victoria). The building was originally built as the official residence of the Governor of Victoria between 1872 and 1876, and was occupied by George Bowen (Governor of Victoria, 1873-1879) in 1876. When the Australian colonies federated in 1901, the building became the official residence of the Governor-General of Australia, as the federal parliament was located in Melbourne from 1901 to 1927 (the federal parliament relocated to Canberra in 1927).

This postcard includes a dividing line, which indicates designated areas for correspondence (on the left) and the address of the recipient (on the right), in line with the Australian postage regulations introduced in 1905.
The postcard is undated, although it is estimated to have been published in the early 20th Century. The publisher of the postcard, W. T. Pater and Co., were particularly active around 1908, as is shown by a search for mentions of the company in the Trove collection of historical newspapers, so the postcard may have been published circa 1908. As the postcard was printed in Saxony, Germany, this indicates that it was produced prior to the start of the First World War (1914-1918).
Based upon the dividing line and the place of publication, it is believed that this postcard was published between 1905 and 1914; due to the activity of the company, the postcard has been given an estimated publication date of circa 1908.
W.T.P. = W. T. Pater and Co., a printing, publishing, and stationary company, based in Melbourne (Vic.); the company produced and sold a wide range of postcards, as well as selling various other items; the company was founded in 1896 by William Thompson Pater (1861-1929)
