An article published in two Taree newspapers in 1936 refers to Cliff McNeill and Ross Summerville as being in class 2A. It is reasonable to expect that the two students were in class 3A in the following year, which would therefore mean that the photograph on this postcard was taken in 1937.

Most of the students’ names have been confirmed with newspaper articles from Taree (NSW). The newspapers give some full names (Belle Brewer as Isabel Brewer, Dorothy Mooney as Dot Mooney) and some different spellings (Cliff McNeil as Clifford McNeill, i.e. with two Ls in “McNeill”). Two names were not confirmed: John Cox and Jack Willis.

Some of the students in this class photo appear to be of Aboriginal or non-white background. In the 2021 census approximately 11% of the population in the Taree area identified as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
